Astilbes

Astilbes are invaluable in a partial shade garden.  They do best in 3-6 hours of morning sun (although there are some varieties that are more sun tolerant).  They are beautiful early summer bloomers that are both deer and rabbit resistant.  They can be used in fresh flower arrangements and can be dried as well.  You can also use them in container gardens.  Some varieties have a slight fragrance.  Below is a list of what we are planting for 2012.  Make sure to call or stop by to see if they are available.

Key to Culture:

A:  Arendsii Group- Hybrid astilbes developed by George Arends.  Includes crosses of chinensis davidii with astilboides and japonica and thunbergii groups.  95% of Astilbes sold in the US are Arendsii!

C: Chinensis Group- Later blooming and moderately drought tolerant.  Forms a robust, deeply divided, coarsely textured clump of foliage.  Flowers are borne on narrow, branched panicles.

J: Japonica Group- Early bloom time and glossy green leaves which are often tinged with red.  Flowers are produced in dense pyramidal clusters.
